Little is known about Charlie's personality. With the Grand High Witch indisposed, Charlie, his grandmother, Daisy and Bruno round up the remaining vials of mouse maker, and the Grand High Witch's book of witches, and vow to rid the world of witches forever years later, he has aged gracefully but is still arming young children with the serum in an effort to keep his promise. In the process, they duel with the Grand High Witch, and Charlie is successful in turning her into a large, volatile mouse. The three mice and Agatha retire to the Grand High Witches room following this in an effort to round up all of the mouse maker serum. In turn, Agatha watches as all of the witches (except the Grand High Witch) are turned into mice. Charlie realises that he and the others will be stuck as mice forever, but does not let this get them down the three mice and his grandmother formulate a plan to take down the witches.Īrmed with the serum he stole from the Grand High Witches hotel room, Charlie pours the contents into the soup that the witches are due to eat later that night. They formulate a plan to reverse-engineer the mouse maker serum, however their efforts are futile and the cure fails. Now a mouse, Charlie reveals himself, Bruno, and Daisy - who is also a child turned-mouse - to his grandmother. Charlie too, moments later, falls pray to the serum and is turned into a mouse. Charlie eventually witnesses the witches plans to turn all of the children into witches, and witnesses a boy he met earlier, Bruno Jenkins, be turned into a mouse using the Grand High Witch's "mouse maker" potion. Unbeknownst to the two, however, the witches, and especially the Grand High Witch, follow Charlie and Agatha to the hotel. Following this, Charlie was once more uprooted and forced to leave his grandmother's home to evade the witches.Ĭharlie is moved to the coast to stay in a hotel with his grandmother until the witches pass. Charlie's life changed drastically once more, however, when he encountered a woman in the store who offered him candy, A woman he would later find out was a witch. Charlie's mood drastically changed and he began enjoying living with his grandmother. Things started to look up for Charlie, however, when Agatha purchased him a pet mouse, which he named Daisy. Despite this, Charlie was reluctant to accept his new life, and his mood dipped for an extended period after his parents death at times, he was reluctant to eat. Charlie went to live with his grandmother in his mother's childhood home, and moved into her bedroom shortly after. IT GETS GOOD AGAIN! We could finish the rest of the book without a whiny witch and I have to say, I did like the job of the reader other than that hard-to-listen to chapter.Charlie initially lived with his parents, but was forced to fall under the guardianship of his grandmother, Agatha Hansen, after the death of his parents in a tragic car accident. After that terrible chapter, I was worried about how the rest of the book would be and I am happy to report that. That particular chapter was so bad that I could only grasp 30-40 percent of what the Grand High Witch was saying, My daughter, who this audiobook was for, could probably only pick out 5-10 percent.maybe. I almost didn't want to listen to the rest of the audibook. Then the chapterk took a tumble and it's a large one for me. or was I? The book was rather pleasing and well done up until Chapter 7 where we hear the Grand High Witch. After hearing the really nice sample that included sound effects, voice-changes, etc, I thought such a reviewer could just be overally sensitive. UPDATE 10/22 Before getting the book, I checked out other reviews and saw some negative ones about the Grand High Witch's voice. I really wish I could give this book a higher rating. This book should have come with a WARNING on the front cover. Getting to the end was touch and go several times! Unfortunately, without knowing if Miranda Richardson is going to use her pleasant voice or her screeching voice, we will never buy a book she narrates again. The story itself was fabulous, and the only reason we finished the book.which was no easy feat.

Besides the skin crawling voice and the inaudible performance, the sound would go from so loud your head throbbed, to so low, you had to stop a rewind a few times before you could figure out what was said. Did anyone at the publisher listen to this before releasing it for sale? I would be shocked if that were the case. Besides making our ears bleed, we could understand about every third word of the High Witch. Her voice is so shrill that nails scratching on a chalk board is much more comforting. Do NOT listen to this book in the car, as the voice of the High Witch will make you want to drive straight into a wall.
